This is the exact recipe that I make for breakfast every single morning. While avocado toast cannot really be called a “recipe,” I wanted to share this combination as it’s something I never get tired of.

Ingredients for the Best Tahini Avocado Toast

  • Crusty sourdough bread (pictured here is from Izola)
  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • Runny tahini
  • Nutritional yeast
  • Old Bay Seasoning
  • Everything bagel seasoning
  • Lemon Juice

How can I make Everything But the Bagel Seasoning at home?

To make Everything But the Bagel Seasoning, combine:

  • 1 TBS poppy seeds
  • 1 TBS toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 TBS dried garlic
  • 1 TBS dried onion
  • 2 tsp sea salt

If you’re not familiar, “Everything But the Bagel” is the Trader Joe’s-specific name for this seasoning mix. If you live in the U.S. but are not near a Trader Joe’s store, a format of this blend is becoming more widely available. I recently purchased some at Aldi.

How to Find Tahini that is Not Bitter

Tahini (sesame seed butter) is becoming more widely available in the U.S. That being stated, there is a large amount of variance in quality, taste, and texture. I recommend the following:

  • Purchase only tahini made from sesame seeds (without additives)
  • Look for a very runny texture, much more liquid than a standard peanut butter
  • Look for a label that reads “hulled.” Unhulled tahini contains the exterior shells of the sesame seeds which can lend a slightly more bitter taste. Hulled tahini is also smoother and typically lighter in color.
  • “Raw” means that the sesame seeds were not roasted during the mixing process. Unroasted tahini has a more mild flavor and contains slightly more nutrients, but feel free to taste both to find your personal preference

How do we liquefy thick tahini that settles in the bottom of the jar?

To prevent tahini separation, stir the mixture as soon as you open it to evenly distribute any oils. If it has already thickened, simply scoop dried tahini out of that jar and blend in a food processor or high speed blender. This will encourage it to come back together. If it’s still hardened, add sesame oil to the blender one teaspoon at a time, pulsing at each interval.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 slices sourdough bread
  • 1/2 small ripe avocado
  • 2 TBS nutritional yeast
  • 2 tsp runny tahini
  • 1/4 tsp Old Bay seasoning
  • 1/2 TBS everything bagel seasoning (see notes for DIY version)
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Toast bread to your liking. While bread is toasting, mash avocado with a fork onto a small plate. Once mashed, add nutritional yeast to avocado and mash to combine.
  2. Spread avocado mixture across two slices of bread. Top bread with tahini drizzle, Old Bay, everything bagel seasoning, and a bit of lemon juice. Enjoy right away.

Notes

To make your own everything bagel seasoning, mix together 1 TBS poppy seeds, 1 TBS toasted sesame seeds, 1 TBS dried garlic, 1 TBS dried onion, and 2 tsp sea salt.
