What is autumn sangria?
Sangria is a Spanish drink of red wine mixed with lemonade, fruit, and spices. It is traditionally thought of as a summer beverage but can easily be made into the perfect fall cocktail with just a few changes. Autumn sangria is made with a dark red wine base, seasonal fruit such as pears and apples, bubbly sparkling water, and is garnished with a sprig of rosemary. It is refreshing yet full of cozy flavors.
What fruit do you put in sangria?
The portion of the drink is very flexible. To keep the autumnal theme of this recipe, we’re adding apples, pears, orange slices, and pomegranate arils. In the summer, fruits such as peaches and fresh berries are very popular.
What kind of wine is good for red sangria?
With likely origins in Spain and Portugal, sangria is one of the most popular beverages in Spanish restaurants. The term itself even dates back to the 18th century. In the EU, the drink is not actually allowed to be called “sangria” unless it has Spanish or Portuguese origins. For these reasons, a Spanish red wine, like Rioja is often a popular choice.
In this recipe in particular I used a red blend. I would recommend against using an expensive bottle or one that you’ve been saving. We are adding in sugar + fruit so a cheaper bottle is best. If you live near a Trader Joe’s they have a lot of great options. Feel free to pick up two bottles and make this red wine chocolate cake next!
How to Make Red Autumn Sangria
Sangria is one of my favorite “big batch” drinks because making it is very simple: to make it you simply mix your wine, sugar, and fruit in a large pitcher and let is sit for at least an hour. This will help the sugars in the fruit break down and better flavor the drink. Many recipes will ask for an addition of brandy, which I did not have on hand so just left out. To serve, I added a splash of sparkling water and a small bit of vinegar for tartness. A too-sweet sangria is definitely what we’re trying to avoid
Can you freeze sangria?
Yes! When kept in the fridge, sangria can start to taste off after 3-4 days. However, it can be stored in the freezer for up to three months. Be sure to add it to a tightly sealed container and leave a bit of open space, as it will expand.
