What is jarred cookie mix?

This recipe is a perfect do-it-yourself gift idea for friends and family. Cookie mix is made by combining all "pantry" portions of a typical cookie recipe (such as flour, oats, baking powder, salt, and sugar) in a jar. So, when your recipient wants to bake their own cookies, they only need to add an egg (such as a vegan flax egg), some butter, and vanilla extract. It saves time and mess in the kitchen, while of course tasting delicious.

Ingredients Needed to Make Cookie Mix in a Jar

  • 1 ¼ cups all purpose flour
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • ¾ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup chocolate chips
  • ½ cup small candies (such as M&Ms or mini peanut butter cups)
32 oz jar of layered cookie mix with chocolate

Ingredients Needed to Bake Vegan Cookies (Once You Have The Mix Prepared)

  • 1 flax egg (1 TBS ground flaxseed + 3 TBS water), or one regular egg
  • ¾ cup room-temperature butter (1 ½ sticks), like Miyokos
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

These are the only ingredients your gift recipient will need to add once they have your present. How thoughtful of you!

How to Make Cookie Mix in a Jar

1. Begin by cleaning and drying a 32 oz jar. This is often a size of store-bought pasta sauce, so that's what I used here. Begin layering in ingredients in the order they are listed; begin with flour, rolled oats, baking soda, sea salt, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Use a spoon to pack each layer down as you go; this will result in the most even layers. Top jar off with chocolate candies of choice and tie with a ribbon.

2. To make the cookies, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. and line two baking sheets with parchment or silicone mats. Blend 1 flax egg with ¾ cup butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract in a stand mixer or with a hand mixer. Pour in cookie mix and beat to combine, until incorporated. Scoop out 1 TBS-sized cookies and space them evenly across the baking sheets. You will have around 25 cookies in total.

3. Bake cookies for 10-12 minutes, until browned on the edges and firm in the middle. Let cool on the baking sheets, where they will cook a bit more. Store cookies in a sealed container at room temperature for 5-7 days.

Printable to Attach to the Gift

The jar of mix is really only half of the gift - it's important to supply a recipe so your recipient can actually make these on their own. To download a printable recipe card, click here.

This printable comes with two cards, so feel free to double the recipe. I find it is easy easy to make in bulk, if you have enough clean jars and ingredients of course. For these photos, I repurposed a 32 oz. jar of Rao's Marinara Sauce.

More Tips for Making This Recipe

  • Be sure to pack down each layer, going from smallest sized pieces (ie, flour and sugar) to larger (candies). This will ensure you have nicely defined layers and that they do not run together.
  • A funnel or rolled piece of paper can help with spooning the flour into the jar.
  • Use a ribbon to decorate the jar for a festive touch.
  • Tape the recipe on the outside of the container or to the lid of the jar for easy access.
  • Feel free to substitute any small candy for the chocolate pieces! As you can see in the photos, I used M&Ms, mini peanut butter cups, and chocolate chunks.
  • If your recipient likes nuts, those would be an excellent addition alongside the candy pieces. Just bear in mind that nuts can spoil when left unrefrigerated (as can flour, but not as quickly). So, you may want to recommend refrigeration of the jar.
