This summer, Cinnamon Cold Brew brings the coffee shop right to your fridge! The cold brew process mellows any harsh bitterness from the coffee beans and a dash of cinnamon adds sweetness without the need for added sugar.

Looking for an easy way to spice up your cold brew? Add cinnamon!

Especially in the summer months, I love keeping a batch of cold brew in the fridge for easy drinking (especially when I don't feel like brewing an entire pot of hot coffee).

Cinnamon Cold Brew FAQs

How is cold brew made?

Instead of steeping ground coffee in hot water briefly, cold brew is made by adding coarsely ground coffee beans to cold water, a mixture which is then steeped overnight. Think of it as using time instead of temperature to brew, with a slow steep

Is cold brew concentrate more caffeinated than regular hot drip coffee?

Yes. Drip coffee is typically 1 part coffee to 16-20 parts water. Cold brew concentrate, on the other hand, is closer to 1 part coffee to just 6-7 parts water. Therefore, the caffeine from the coffee beans is much more condensed per cup. This is why many people choose to add water or milk to the concentrate, to avoid feeling "jittery" drinking something so potent.

How is cold brew different from iced coffee?

Iced coffee is brewed with hot water, then chilled and mixed with ice. As mentioned above, cold brew is made without hot water and instead is steeped overnight.

Things to Love about Cinnamon Cold Brew

  1. It is less acidic than regular hot-brewed drip coffee. This means it can be a good option for people who have a sensitive stomach.
  2. It's a great way to use old coffee beans, or beans you do not love the flavor of.
  3. It is convenient! A large pitcher kept in the fridge means access to concentrated, delicious caffeine at any point of the day.
  4. Our brains associate cinnamon with "sweet," so there are lighter notes here without any added sugar. You can of course add sugar to the concentrate as well, something I would recommend if you go the latte route.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup coarsely ground coffee beans around 90 grams
  • 6 cups of filtered water
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Almond milk oat milk, etc. for serving

Instructions

  • To a large pitcher, add coffee grounds and water. Add cinnamon and vanilla, then use a wooden spoon to stir to combine. The grounds will float to the top, so try to mix around the cinnamon as much as possible.
  • Let cold brew sit for at least 8 hours in the fridge (up to 24 for best flavor).
  • Place a fine mesh strainer or a thin tea towel over another pitcher or container. Carefully pour coffee mixture (grounds and all) through the strainer/towel. Set coffee ground aside (see post for uses) and strain a few more times. This will ensure you are able to get all of the grounds out cleanly. Alternatively, slowly pour cold brew through a paper coffee filter (this will take a bit longer but will provide a smooth result after one time.
  • Your coffee is ready to drink! It will keep in the fridge for at least a week. It is fairly caffeinated, so feel free to mix with water or nondairy milk for a latte. I will normally mix ½ cup cold brew with ½-1 cup water or milk. Feel free to adjust to your preference.
